ESPN, NBC Both Record All-Time Lows For NFL Broadcasts

Giants-Falcons Lands ESPN Lowest
Rating Ever For "MNF" Franchise
The two primetime NFL games this past weekend charted all time record low ratings.  Giants-Falcons on ESPN drew a 6.7 coverage area rating (5.7 U.S. rating, 6.45 million HHs) Nielsen rating and 8.48 million viewers, marking the lowest rating ever for the "MNF" franchise.  The previous low this season for "MNF" was a 6.9 coverage area rating (5.9 U.S. rating, 6.63 million HHs) and 8.5 million viewers for 49ers-Cardinals on September 10, which began at 10:30pm ET as the second half of an opening week doubleheader. Giants-Falcons was up against Red Sox-Indians ALCS Game Three on Fox and D’Backs-Rockies NLCS Game Four on TBS.  The 7.1/11 national Nielsen rating (11.2 million viewers) for Saints-Seahawks on NBC's “Sunday Night Football” marks the lowest rating ever for a primetime NFL game on broadcast TV.  That game competed against D'Backs-Rockies Game Three  (THE DAILY).  For Monday night, “MNF” topped all broadcasts among males 18-34 with 1.6 million viewers, 18-49 (3.3 million) and 25-54 (3.2 million) (MULTICHANNEL.com, 10/17).

KIMMEL & BITS: After ESPN "MNF" Producer Jay Rothman told the N.Y. Times yesterday that Jimmy Kimmel would not be welcomed back to the “MNF” booth after his appearance during Giants-Falcons, Kimmel said, “I don’t know what I did exactly but apparently it was horrific.” More Kimmel: “Everyone (in the booth) was laughing whether you can hear it or not. If people were not laughing, I would not have continued with it.” Kimmel indicated he received a call from ESPN Exec VP/Content John Skipper “in an attempt to smooth things over.” Kimmel: “He was apologetic. The unfortunate thing for people who did not see the broadcast is now it looks like I exposed myself on national television.” Kimmel said, “Whether I’m technically banned or whether Jay Rothman has the right to make that decision, let’s put it this way: Jay Rothman is banned from my show.” ESPN said in a statement, “We have had a great relationship working with Jimmy and we will continue to work with him in the future” (Richard Deitsch, SI.com, 10/17). In San Jose, John Ryan wrote Kimmel's "MNF" appearance is “being discussed in terms of the shots at [Joe] Theismann, but to me it seems like it hit a lot closer to home for ESPN, specifically to [Tony] Kornheiser.” Kornheiser is “notoriously thin-skinned” and he “hasn’t much liked the suggestion that he ran Theismann out of the booth” (MERCEXTRA.com, 10/17).

NBC Has Trouble With Cable Cam
During Sunday's Saints-Seahawks Game
CANDID CAMERAS: During Sunday's Saints-Seahawks game, NBC's overhead camera crashed to the field near Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck, delaying the game for almost 10 minutes.  Later in the game, a sideline camera zoomed in on Seahawks' coach Mike Holmgren's play card, and it was "so clear that anyone could read Holmgren's plays from a living room couch." Holmgren said, "I don't even know how they do that. Was that the camera that almost hit Matt and killed him? ... I would rather they wouldn't do that." "SNF" Producer Fred Gaudelli estimated that the net cut away from Holmgren's play card after "1 1/2 seconds," but Monday called the team to apologize to Holmgren. Gaudelli said, "You don't want to effect what is happening on the field. That's where the competition committee and the Seahawks and Mike are upset -- and rightfully so -- about what happened" (AP, 10/17).  Meanwhile, in Chicago Ed Sherman writes "several viewers were baffled" by a Fox experiment that "offered a sideways view from behind the action." Sherman:  "Can the experiment. You completely lost perspective of where the ball was on the field" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/18).
