Moonves Inks New Multi-Year
Employment Deal With CBS
CBS Corp. CEO LES MOONVES as part of a restructuring of his compensation, will accept a cash salary decrease from $5.9M -- including $2.9M in deferred compensation -- to $3.5M. His equity-based compensation will rise, though, and will include $7.6M a year in restricted stock as well as an option to buy five million CBS shares to vest over the next four years (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/17).

LAW & ORDER: Former Basketball Canada CEO FRED NYKAMP has “moved forward” with a breach-of-contract lawsuit against the Canadian Soccer Association, seeking C$1.75M in damages stemming from the CSA hiring him away from Basketball Canada but failing “to follow through with the agreement” to make him CEO (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 10/17)….Wachovia has filed a federal law suit against suspended Falcons QB MICHAEL VICK, alleging he defaulted on a $1.3M loan to start a wine store (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 10/17).

PEAK & BOO: DINO DUVA, promoter for WBC interim heavyweight champion SAMUEL PETER, yesterday was suspended for six months and fined $10,000 by the New York State Athletic Commission for “repeatedly taking an illegal peak at the judges’ scorecards" during the October 6 title match between Peter and JAMEEL MCCLINE. Duva said that he will “accept the fine and some type of suspension," but he will file and appeal "to make sure that the facts on the record are clear” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/17).

KID FANTASTIC: The NFL will hold a contest dubbed “SUPER KID” in which children ages 6-15 can enter a drawing once a day through January 11 at NFLRush.com for a chance to hand the game ball to the kicker prior to the start of Super Bowl XLII. NFL spokesperson JOANNA HUNTER said, “It’s the first time the NFL has done a promotion like this” (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/17).

NAMES: The Pennsylvania state House of Representatives passed a resolution urging MLB to retire ROBERTO CLEMENTE’s No.21. JACKIE ROBINSON’s No. 42 was retired from the league in April ’97, the 50th anniversary of his Dodgers debut. MLB “has remained mum on the subject” (AP, 10/17)….Lightning C VINCENT LECAVALIER has pledged $3M over eight years from his foundation toward building the Vincent Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 10/17)....DAN ROONEY has published “MY 75 YEARS WITH THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS AND THE NFL,” detailing such events as being a management participant in the first labor negotiations in ’56, discussions with then-Commissioner PETE ROZELLE in ’63 on whether the NFL should play the Sunday after PRESIDENT KENNEDY was assassinated, and being a key player in the AFL/NFL realignment in ’70. In Dallas, Rick Gosselin wrote the book is “a pleasant surprise” (DALLASNEWS.com, 10/16).
