Angels GM Stoneman Resigns Role; Tony Reagins New GM

Angels GM Bill Stoneman resigned from his role yesterday, citing "the burnout factor," and team Owner Arte Moreno introduced Dir of Player Development Tony Reagins as the new GM, according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. TIMES. Moreno said Stoneman, who was hired as GM in '99, would remain in the organization as a "direct advisor to me." Reagins, who joined the Angels in '92 as an intern and "ran their highly regarded minor league system for the past six years," signed a three-year contract (L.A. TIMES, 10/17). In L.A., Doug Padilla notes Reagins, an African-American, is MLB's fourth minority GM, along with the White Sox' Ken Williams, Mets' Omar Minaya and Marlins' Michael Hill (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 10/17).

POWER STRUCTURE: In L.A., Bill Plaschke writes by hiring Reagins, Moreno "is ensuring that the loudest voice in the room will belong" to manager Mike Scioscia. Moreno "smartly paved the way for his most important baseball decisions to be made by his best baseball guy without costing him one of baseball's best managers." Reagins will be "the name on the bank account, but Scioscia will be in charge of the money. ... No other manager in baseball has as much power." Moreno said the moves "give Mike more responsibility to make sure we give him what he needs." Insiders said that "although Scioscia loves the idea of [Yankees 3B] Alex Rodriguez, he agrees with Moreno that the cost may damage their ability to reshape other holes in the lineup" (L.A. TIMES, 10/17). In California, Bill Plunkett writes Reagins "could find himself dealing with high-powered agents like Scott Boras for the first time this winter," and the new GM "acknowledged he has had no dealings with Boras in the past." Reagins said of Boras, "He's a strong advocate for his players. I will be a strong advocate for the Angels" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 10/17). The Angels also promoted Manager of Baseball Operations Abe Flores to Dir of Player Development and Player Performance Analyst Tory Hernandez Manager of Baseball Operations (Angels).
