MLBPA Asks Mitchell To Clarify Comments, Set Time Frame

MLBPA Feels Recent Comments
From Mitchell Are Misleading
MLBPA General Counsel Michael Weiner said that the union sent a letter to steroid investigator George Mitchell yesterday, contending that statements he made about his investigation were “misleading,” according to Michael Schmidt of the N.Y. TIMES. Mitchell in a statement Friday said that he had “asked to meet with players in order to provide them with evidence about the allegations of their drug use and to give them a chance to respond.” He also said that “providing the evidence was consistent with statements he made in March.” However, the MLBPA said that those statements “appeared to be a change in policy.” Weiner: “I cannot find anywhere in any of our correspondence throughout the investigation where he says it has been his position to allow players to examine the evidence held against them. The union has asked him to clarify his position and provide us with a time frame for a completion of the investigation.” Schmidt notes with the opportunity to view evidence, the MLBPA “could change its position and advise players directly linked to documentary evidence to go before the investigation in an effort to clear their names” (N.Y. TIMES, 10/17). Weiner added of Mitchell’s statement, “I don’t think what he said is accurate. It certainly is not accurate if what he’s saying (is), ‘it’s been my position since March 1, 2007’” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/17).

PUBLIC REAX: In Philadelphia, Bill Conlin writes of reports that Mitchell's investigation will eventually reveal names of steroid users, “Without genuine public outrage, this story will remain dead in the water.” The sport of baseball is “astride a tsunami of economic prosperity, fan acceptance and competitive excitement.” Should names be revealed, "do not be surprised if the public reaction is to stifle a giant yawn. If the report is withheld until the New Year or later, pitchers and catchers will be less than 2 months from reporting for another spring training” (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 10/17).
