Maryland Examining Potential Stadium
Sites In Attempt To Lure United |
Maryland state Comptroller Peter Franchot yesterday, in a letter to Maryland Stadium Authority Chair Frederick Puddester, "began a public push ... to lure DC United, calling on the state to find a site for a new soccer stadium," according to David Nakamura of the WASHINGTON POST. The letter prompted DC government leaders to say that "they will fight to keep the team in the city." United co-Owner Victor MacFarlane last week said that he "has hired consultants to examine potential stadium sites in Maryland and Virginia" after negotiations with DC Mayor Adrian Fenty for a stadium in the city had stalled. Franchot yesterday met with MacFarlane and United President Kevin Payne "to reiterate his interest." DC Council Chair Vincent Gray and other Council members "also met with United officials yesterday and pledged to work with the franchise to find a new home in [DC]." Gray said Franchot's letter "puts us all on notice that they are seriously looking. We had to know that was going to happen with the situation they are in." Nakamura notes Franchot's interest "privately rekindled talk among some Maryland officials" of the club's interest four years ago in two College Park locations (WASHINGTON POST, 10/17). In DC, Tim Lemke writes it "does not appear talks between United and the state of Maryland have moved beyond the introductory phase." The team is thought to be considering offers in other locations, including Loudoun County (VA), and also "would consider a move to a new site" in DC (WASHINGTON TIMES, 10/17).
