FOXSports.com’s Lee Spencer cites a marketing expert who characterized NASCAR’s sale of the title sponsorship of its No. 2 series to Nationwide as a “fire sale.” Spencer notes the reported $12M price-tag for the sponsorship, “along with a similar investment for the activation of ad buys,” is “far from” the $30M NASCAR touted in previous negotiations. The sport “was competing for dollars against its own superstar Dale Earnhardt Jr., who stole the headlines all year long by piece feeding segments of his mega deal to the media" (FOXSPORTS.com, 10/9).

COVER BOYS: In Boston, Greg Gatlin notes Celtics F Paul Pierce, G Ray Allen and F Kevin Garnett have appeared together on the covers of Sports Illustrated For Kids, the Improper Bostonian and last Sunday’s Boston Globe magazine. Celtics President Rich Gotham said that the organization backed the players’ decision to appear together in photo shoots. Sources said that the move is "a big change from recent years, when the Celtics had to get creative with their marketing and public relations efforts in hopes of generating some attention” (BOSTON HERALD, 10/11).

OFF THE SHELF: CNBC’s Darren Rovell reports adidas Chair & CEO Herbert Hainer said that the company’s Reebok brand “won’t do any business with Foot Locker until they offer ‘a decent selection’ of Reebok shoes” (CNBC.com, 10/10)
