Ticket Sales Starting To Pick Up For NLCS Game One, Two

Tickets Still Remain For First Two
NLCS Games At Chase Field |
D’Backs President Derrick Hall said that as of yesterday, about 4,000 tickets remained for tonight’s NLCS against the Rockies, and about 2,800 remain for tomorrow’s Game Two , according to Doug Haller of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Hall: “I expected Friday to be sold out. (Tonight) will be close” (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/11). In N.Y., Ben Shpigel notes that "as of a few days ago, there were 16,000 tickets available" for tonight's Game One. Hall said that the team sold 7,000 Game One tickets yesterday. Hall noted that the team averaged “about 40,000 fans in September and it drew more than 48,000 for the first two games of the division series” against the Cubs, who “always draw well” in Arizona. D’Backs P Doug Davis said the Game Two crowd was about “60-40 [D’Backs] fans to Cubs fans.” But after that game D’Backs General Partner & CEO Jeff Moorad told the players, “We got our fans back.” Shpigel notes the D’Backs’ attendance has “declined steadily nearly every year since 2002," the season after they won the World Series. In '06, they ranked 24th in MLB, and this year, despite an increase of “more than 3,000 a game, they still ranked 20th at 28,598.” Hall: “The last four or five years, we lacked an identity. We had no connection to the fans. We just tried to piecemeal it together.” He added that the “uptick began last season, when the overhauled front office showed a renewed commitment to letting the organization’s younger players gain experience.” Meanwhile, a Rockies spokesperson said that team “immediately sold out” Games Three-Five of the series at Coors Field (N.Y. TIMES, 10/11).
SEARCHING FOR AN ANSWER: Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti said, “Usually, I would be getting on the fans in this situation because that’s a good, young, fun team … but (Chase Field is) a big, dark garage. It looks like an airplane hanger. There’s nothing appealing about it. It’s too big.” But Denver Post columnist Woody Paige said, “It’s not about the ballpark. It’s about the fact that the (D’Backs) are a team without a real personality.” ESPN.com’s J.A. Adande said the problem is “the team isn’t deeply entrenched in the psyche with the residents” (“Around The Horn,” ESPN, 10/10).
