NHL To Tighten '08-09 Schedule; Season To Drop Puck In Prague

Penguins-Senators Could
Open '08-09 Season In Prague |
The NHL will "push back its starting date" for the '08-09 season by one week, either to October 9 or October 10, and the season will again begin in Europe with two Penguins-Senators games in Prague, according to sources cited by Ken Campbell in THE HOCKEY NEWS. There "was a push by some U.S.-based teams to push the start of the regular season back even further because of competition" with the MLB playoffs and football, but the league and NHLPA agreed to start next season just a week later. Rather than have the season run longer, the NHL "will further compress the schedule early in the season," though players and coaches "already have complained that the schedule is too compressed and there is not enough time for practise and recovery between games." The sources said the league is undecided about what to do for the '09-2010 season "when the schedule will already be further compressed to accommodate" the 2010 Vancouver Olympics (THEHOCKEYNEWS.com, 10/10).
CZECHS PLEASE: In Ottawa, Chris Stevenson writes about sending the Penguins and Senators to Prague, "What is there, one Czech player on the two teams? ... Why not send the New York Rangers, who have a handful of Czechs? That would create a buzz in Prague and, really, why else do it?" (OTTAWA SUN, 10/11).
