ESPN's Coverage Area Rating
For Patriots-Bengals Down 12.7%
ESPN earned an 8.9 coverage area rating for the Patriots-Bengals "MNF" game, down 12.7% from a 10.2 for last year's comparative Packers-Eagles game. NBC earned a 9.4/15 final rating for the Eagles-Giants "SNF" game, down 13.0% from a 10.8/17 rating for Seahawks-Bears last year (THE DAILY).

TIGER TRAGEDY: In Memphis, Jim Masilak writes ESPN2 “struck just the right balance” in covering last night’s Marshall-Memphis college football game following the recent shooting death of Memphis DE Taylor Bradford. Announcers Rece Davis, Lou Holtz, Mark May and Rob Stone “provided the gravity the occasion required” and “avoided the sort of maudlin sentimentality to which the network … too often resorts.” ESPN2 carried live both the Memphis players walking arm-in-arm onto the field and the moment of silence and balloon releasing just before kickoff (COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 10/3). Before the game, Davis said the school was working to get Bradford’s No. 93 on “game programs, (and) perhaps some type of memoriam on the Memphis players as well. ... Vans that will shuttle the students to the stadium from campus will also be painted with the No. 93 to pay their respects and pay tribute” (“College Football Live,” ESPN, 10/2).

NOTES: Comcast SportsNet Chicago earned its highest final season average for Cubs broadcasts with a 4.2 rating, up 45% from last season's 2.9.  Also, ratings were up 21% for the pregame show and up 49% for the postgame show (Comcast SportsNet)....In Orlando, Jerry Greene writes FSN’s 13-episode “Sport Science” show “rocks” and “looks cool.” The show asks questions about "how things work in sports and answer[s] them scientifically with the aid of athletes” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 10/3).
