Hockey HOFer Cam Neely Rejoins Bruins In Newly-Created VP Slot

Neely To Join Bruins In
Newly-Created VP Position
The Bruins have named Hockey HOFer CAM NEELY to the newly-created position of VP, where he will serve as “somewhat of a front office jack-of-all-trades,” according to Kevin Paul Dupont of the BOSTON GLOBE. Neely said, "It was not an easy decision. I had to look at all aspects of the organization, but I am ready for this challenge."  Dupont notes the move comes as the “hockey business is not good in Boston. In fact, it is the worst it has been since [Owner JEREMY JACOBS] took over" the club in '75. Jacobs said, “Football and baseball is on everyone’s mind here. The basketball team has created a lot of heat by getting (Kevin) Garnett. We have to start performing” (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/26). Jacobs added, “Irrelevant is perhaps where we find ourselves in the environment we’re in. To become relevant is just to win. It’s very simple. There isn’t a real complicated route there. If we win, [fans will] come.” In Boston Stephen Harris writes Neely’s hiring is “perhaps the greatest indication the [Bruins] front office is on the right track.” Harris: “If Neely ... believes in these people, maybe fans should, too” (BOSTON HERALD, 9/26).

GARDEN PARTY: Jacobs said that he “would be interested in owning one of three casinos proposed” by Massachusetts Gov. DEVAL PATRICK, with the old Boston Garden site a possibility. Jacobs: “I’m not sure if the county or state would consider [the  area] a viable location, but everyone should think about it” (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/26).
