Colorado Decides To End
Beer Sales At Basketball Games |
A decision by Univ. of Colorado (CU) officials to permanently stop selling beer at basketball games at the Coors Events Center "is expected to cost the athletic department" $70,000-80,000 a year in revenue, according to Heath Urie of the Boulder DAILY CAMERA. The move brings CU's policy for beer sales at basketball games "in line with the rest" of the Big 12. CU Dir of Game Management & Operations Tom McGann indicated that the department intends to make up for the lost revenue "by allowing credit-card purchases at concession stands for the first time this season." CU students also "will soon have the option of using their cell phones to send a text message" to a pre-paid debit account to purchase concessions. CU Dir of Media Relations Bronson Hilliard said that the decision to stop beer sales "will not affect" the school's nearly $1.3M sponsorship agreement with Coors. That deal "grants Coors the right to claim 'exclusive malt beverage sponsorship of CU'" through 2011, but it does not make Coors the sole provider of beer at CU events. Centerplate handles food and alcohol vending services for sporting events at CU (DAILY CAMERA, 9/19).
