The Jackson County (MO) Sports Complex Authority on Tuesday pushed back the completion date for Arrowhead Stadium renovations from fall ’09 to December 31, 2010, after the Chiefs’ announcement last week that they will put an additional $50M toward the project.  Authority Chair Mike Smith said, “We’d rather do it right than rush it through and do it wrong” (K.C. STAR, 8/22).

Daytona Beach Planning Board Recommends
Approval Of Daytona Live Partnership
BEACH BOYS: In Daytona Beach, Derek Kinner reports the City Commission Planning Board on Thursday recommended the approval of a development agreement with ISC and The Cordish Co. for the $430M Daytona Live! project across from Daytona Int'l Speedway. ISC will contribute the land and $15-20M, while Cordish and individual tenants will "provide the rest of the financing for the makeover of ISC’s Speedplex Office Park.” Cordish VP David Froelich said that reps from his company and ISC "planned the development so most of the facilities will be away from bordering streets” (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 8/24).

REBEL YELL: In Las Vegas, Matt Youmans notes as part of UNLV's ten-year, $32M deal with ISP Sports, the school's athletic department will see “significant facility upgrades.” ISP will spend $3.5M over ten years on renovations including a new overhead scoreboard, courtside signage system, and an outdoor marquee at the Thomas & Mack Center.  New scoreboards will also be added to Sam Boyd Stadium and Wilson Stadium (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/24).

OSCAR WORTHY: A LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL editorial states Mayor Oscar Goodman “has crusaded to bring a major-league sports franchise to town," and it is "no secret that he wants the team to play downtown and help revitalize the area.” Despite Wednesday’s announcement that Harrah’s and AEG will partner on an 20,000-seat arena just off the Strip, Goodman “vowed that the downtown [arena] project will go forward."  The editorial states, "If Las Vegas is indeed one day granted a major professional sports franchise, he will have been the driving force behind that achievement -- even if the team doesn’t call downtown its home” (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/24).
