Donaghy Preparing To Name Other NBA Refs Involved In Gambling

Donaghy (l) Could Detail Gambling
Activities Of Other NBA Refs
Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy is ready to reveal to federal prosecutors the gambling activities of up to 20 league refs, according to a report by ESPN Radio 1050 N.Y. cited by Bill Hutchinson of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The revelations “threaten to give the NBA another black eye and leave league Commissioner David Stern with egg on his face” after he claimed Donaghy was a “rogue, isolated criminal.”  National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA) Exec Dir Lamell McMorris said, “As far as we know, the misconduct was isolated to one individual, and we’ll stand by that until proven otherwise” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/19). USA TODAY’s Johnson & Nance report the names of several referees have surfaced, but “none of the activities of the other referees appeared to be criminal.” However, they may be “in violation of NBA regulations, which severely restrict wagering by referees and other personnel.” A federal law enforcement officer said that no refs were involved in betting on basketball. Former NBRA President Mike Mathis said, “Like anybody else, refs play in fantasy football pools and things like that. I’d be surprised if others are involved in what (Donaghy) did.”  But he added, “Right away, the public is going to say, ‘Aha, that’s what Tim did.’ It gives credence to all those who think games were fixed and conspiracy theorists” (USA TODAY, 8/20).

SPORTS IN A TOUGH SPOT: SI.com’s Chris Mannix wrote it would be surprising if “any of the allegations raise further questions about the way certain games were officiated.”  But Stern would be “compelled to suspend and/or fire all the officials involved [in gambling], an act that would certainly bleed into games if the league is forced to bring in inexperienced officials to pick up the slack.” If he takes no action against those refs, it will “only serve to increase the level of distrust the public feels toward the league” (SI.com, 8/18). ESPN.com’s Howard Bryant: “Sports is in a really interesting position where people need to believe in the game that they’re watching, and if the leagues lose that confidence -- and I think they certainly have in the NBA -- you’re in a lot of trouble; and I don’t know if the sports leagues appreciate that as much as they need to” (“Outside The Lines,” ESPN, 8/19).

DIRTY VEGAS: In N.Y., Marc Berman wrote Stern sent an “awful message to his referees” by holding last season’s All-Star Game in Las Vegas. If referees had stayed at the MGM Grand with other NBA execs and media, they “would have violated their contracts by walking out of the elevator” (N.Y. POST, 8/19). Also in N.Y., Mike Lupica wrote, “Gambling is supposed to be bad, bad, bad, around pro basketball and everything else.” However, it is “perfectly all right” for Kings co-Owners Joe and Gavin Maloof, who own the Palms casino in Las Vegas (N.Y DAILY NEWS, 8/19).

NO IMPACT ON BUSINESS YET: Ticket sales are up this offseason despite the ongoing controversy, and NBA Senior VP/Marketing Communications Mike Bass said, “I can’t speak to any impact of the Donaghy case, but I can tell you that we are on pace to not only break the all-time record for attendance but the all-time record for season ticket sales as well.” Full season-ticket sales are up 41% per team from last year, and Bass said the renewal rate “is far exceeding where we were last year at this time” (N.Y. POST, 8/19).
