Upper Deck Inks Memorabilia Deal With Matsuzaka

Matsuzaka Inks Memorabilia
Deal With Upper Deck
Upper Deck has signed Red Sox P Daisuke Matsuzaka to an exclusive one-year memorabilia deal, according to sources cited by Darren Rovell of CNBC.com. The price for a Matsuzaka signed baseball in English will be $449.99, while his signature with a "Kanji inscription will cost $100 more.”  The public “usually pays between double and triple what the player gets per signature,” meaning that Matsuzaka is “conservatively making $150 per signature, one of the highest in sports memorabilia history.”  While Upper Deck officials have said that they believe demand for Matsuzaka is similar to that for Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols' rookie season six years ago, the average price for a Matsuzaka item on eBay last week was $15.24, while the average Pujols item sold for $35.56. Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez items averaged $54.41 per item on the site (CNBC.com, 8/14).
