Beckham Sits Out As Galaxy-Revolution Draws Big Crowd

Beckham Signs Autographs
Following Game Against Revolution
Galaxy MF David Beckham's ankle injury prevented him from playing in last night’s game against the Revolution, which drew 35,402 at Gillette Stadium, the third largest non-doubleheader crowd in Revolution history, according to Mike Biglin of the METROWEST DAILY NEWS.  Fans “finally realized [that Beckham would not play] in the 89th minute when the jumbotron showed a smiling Beckham on the bench -- eliciting some cheers, but mostly boos” (METROWEST DAILY NEWS, 8/13). YAHOO SPORTS' Martin Rogers wrote of Beckham not playing, "Not the entire sellout crowd ... voiced its displeasure ... but the discontent was reflective of an increasing level of impatience regarding" Beckham's injury (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/12). Beckham signed autographs “for more than 30 minutes” following the game (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/13). Columnist Bob Ryan profiled Beckham in Sunday's BOSTON GLOBE (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/12).  For a link to Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan’s profile of Beckham visit SportsBusinessDaily.com.

UP NEXT: The Galaxy play United at The Home Depot Center in the SuperLiga semifinals on Wednesday, and Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said of Beckham, "We are hoping (that) having a day off will make his ankle better for Wednesday" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/12).  The Red Bulls have sold more than 50,000 tickets for Saturday’s match against the Galaxy at Giants Stadium. Beckham is questionable for the game (THE DAILY). But during the Galaxy-Revolution telecast on WSBK-Ind, Galaxy President & GM Alexi Lalas, referring to Beckham’s five-year deal, said, “You’re going to get your David Beckham fix. Don’t worry about that” (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/13).
