NASCAR Likely To Return To
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve For Race |
NASCAR officials following Saturday’s Busch Series NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal said that they “plan to come back,” according to Dave Feschuk of the TORONTO STAR. Saturday’s announced attendance was 68,150, with a two-day total of 129,473. The grandstands were “largely full by the mid-morning start of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race [which] spoke to the insatiability of the local appetite for motor racing.” Stock-Car Montreal GM Martin Spalding, whose company promoted the race, said, “In the [U.S.], typically, people show up for race day only. Here, the stands were packed for the practices as soon as the Busch cars came out” (TORONTO STAR, 8/5). In Montreal, Dave Stubbs writes the event was a “rousing success” and “word last week was local organizers had a three-year deal to run Busch” on the track. But NASCAR officials "denied that ... saying all sanctions are for one year, subject to annual review" (Montreal GAZETTE, 8/6). NASCAR President Mike Helton said, “Montreal was an incredible facility, absolutely first-class and the whole group that put that whole event on did an incredible job. The turnout, the local folks that probably saw, in most cases, their first NASCAR event, was absolutely incredible. It was a great weekend” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/6).
