MLB Franchise Notes: Red Sox Imitating Yankees?

Red Sox Make Splash At Trade
Deadline With Gagne Acquisition
In N.Y., Murray Chass wrote the Red Sox this season are “doing a terrific imitation of the Yankees.” By acquiring P Eric Gagne in a trade last week, the Red Sox “forfeited their right to criticize or whine about the Yankees.” But Red Sox President & CEO Larry Lucchino said, “We do not think it’s fair or appropriate to lump us with the Yankees. They are a team and market different from the rest of baseball.” The Red Sox' current payroll is $148.6M, while the Yankees' payroll is $215.2M (N.Y. TIMES, 8/5).

BRAVES: In Atlanta, Tim Tucker wrote the Braves' "much criticized payroll limit of the past four years" is gone.  Braves Chair & CEO Terry McGuirk said that since Liberty Media took control of the team in May, the Braves are “operating without a pre-determined limit on player payroll.” McGuirk: “I can honestly tell you we don’t have payroll numbers in mind right now for this year or next year.” But he added, “We will not be where the Yankees and Red Sox are” (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 8/5).

ANGELS: In L.A., Bill Shaikin wrote Angels GM Bill Stoneman "rarely makes a trade," but Owner Arte Moreno "has heard enough" of the no-trade caricature.  Moreno, who said he sometimes talks with Stoneman 5-6 times a day, said, "If all the advice I’m getting from the people I pay is not to make the deal and I’m not listening to them, why are they here?” Moreno, who last summer said he would “guarantee we’re going to do something major,” said, “It’s amazing to me we have to continue to defend ourselves when we’re in first place. I think the health of this organization is the best it’s ever been, and people are questioning how we’re running the club?”  Moreno said of potentially signing Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez this offseason, “Right now, I don’t see a $20[M] player on our team”  (L.A. TIMES, 8/5).
