Canadiens Games Through 2012 |
The Canadiens, the NHL and RDS have agreed to a five-year extension of their current French-language TV deal, according to Pat Hickey of the Montreal GAZETTE. RDS will televise all 82 Canadiens games and a minimum of 40 NHL playoff games. The new contract also gives the net the “rights to make each game available” on RDS.ca. RDS Exec Producer Domenic Vanelli said, “This is a new area and nobody knows what to expect, but we think it will be good for fans who don’t have access to RDS.” Hickey noted the deal also provides for additional NHL games on RIS Info-Sports, which “has some flexibility in the scheduling of those games” (Montreal GAZETTE, 8/1).
TSN NEARING EXTENSION: In Toronto, William Houston reports TSN is "moving closer to reaching a contract extension with the NHL,” as an agreement "is expected to be completed in a few weeks." A source said that the net is "focusing on it getting done before the start of the season.” Houston notes the deal could include more games with Canadian teams, possible playoff games featuring Canadian teams and broadband rights to games televised on TSN (Toronto GLOBE AND MAIL, 8/2).
