Toronto FC Coach Says Galaxy's
Beckham To Sit Out Sunday's Game

Toronto FC coach Mo Johnston said that injured Galaxy MF David Beckham “will not play” in his first scheduled MLS game against Toronto FC on Sunday at sold-out BMO Field, but there “remains a chance [he] will appear in Toronto to meet the press and greet the fans,” according to George Gross of the TORONTO SUN. Toronto FC yesterday issued a press release “warning fans there would be no refunds on tickets should Beckham not compete.” The release said, “Consistent with all sporting events, we are not in a position to guarantee that any player will appear in a match. As with any other player under contract with either club participating in the game, should Mr. Beckham be unable to play in the game no refunds will be issued for tickets purchased” (TORONTO SUN, 8/1). Toronto FC Marketing Manager Cesar Velasco said, "For us, it's another regular-season game. We are sold out throughout the season." FC Dallas, against whom Beckham did not play last night in a SuperLiga match, offered ticket buyers the “first shot at tickets the next time the Galaxy are in town” (TORONTO STAR, 8/1). Sports Business Group President David Carter said Beckham not playing “leaves [MLS] extremely vulnerable, and it leaves the individual franchises really scrambling. Even though it’s not their fault, they really can’t afford the appearance of this being a bait and switch” (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/1).
BECKS LIGHT? ESPN2 has added Sunday's game, which will be a special presentation of the weekly “MLS Primetime Thursday” series. Live coverage will include a 30-minute programming window for pre- and postgame segments (ESPN).
