WNBA Lynx Attendance Down As Team Struggles In Standings

Lynx' League-Worst Record
Not Helping Attendance |
The WNBA Lynx have “virtually disappeared from public radar” as the team has “struggled to a league-worst 5-19 record,” according to Melissa Rosenberg of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. The team’s attendance has fallen from a “reported 10,494 per game” during its inaugural season in ’99 to 6,442 last year. The league average during that span fell from 10,207 per game to 7,433. Lynx COO Roger Griffith: “There’s that initial rush of getting a new team. If you (look at) our first two years, our attendance has been lower since then, but that’s a pattern that every team in this league has followed.” According to reports provided by the Minneapolis Community Development Office to the Minneapolis City Council, the Lynx gave away 47% of their total tickets in ’06, up from 21% in ’05 and 13% in ’04. The reports also indicated 46% of Lynx ticket holders in ’06 were no-shows. While the totals reported to the city are lower than the totals reported by the team to the league, Lynx VP/Business Development Angela Taylor said that the team “stands by the higher totals and that the totals reported to the league are ‘the most accurate’” (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 7/24).
