Blog Hound: Player Stirs Debate Over Doping In Golf

With Gary Player saying this week he knows at least one pro golfer who uses performance-enhancing drugs while also speculating the number of golfers doping might be in double digits, bloggers are discussing his comments as well as whether steroids would even benefit golfers.

“I’m not saying here that it’s a rampant problem, but if there’s no testing you know someone’s probably taking advantage. There’s too much incentive to hit it longer.  Plus, these guys don’t get contracts to play golf.”
Bunkers Paradise
“It doesn’t matter if you can drive 300 yards, but if you can’t make that 10 ft birdie to win the whole thing, then there shouldn’t be any concern about steroids tainting the game. Until they create a steroid for the brain, I don’t think golf has that much to worry about!”

“Gary should know better than to open this door. It’s only natural to want to know who it is he is talking about and there is no doubt that names will be tossed around and reputations sullied.”

“Is anybody honest anymore? Good lord, isn’t this how it all started in baseball? Ken Caminiti ‘broke’ the story that MLB players were on the juice, then wacko Jose Canseco wrote a book, and now nobody can enjoy a home run anymore without thinking, ‘Is that dude on roids?’”

“Gary, shift your position from ‘there are steroids in golf’ to ‘there are ridiculously sized driver heads that look like end tables in golf’ and you might have a legitimate talking point.”
Fore
“Drives don’t win tournaments, chips and putts do. If you want to take steroids, you might as well just tour the world competing in driving distance contests. Then you’ll really have made it to the big time. But you better hurry, before they start testing too!”

BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Sports Blog Index analyzed the buzz surrounding Player's allegations. Do bloggers agree with Player? The blogosphere is divided on the issue, but more bloggers are voicing opinions now than when Tim Finchem first suggested that golf needed testing. • The topic measured 5 out of 10 on The Buzz, which indicates a medium level of interest.
  • Some bloggers are critical of Player, saying that the lack of details suggest that his statements may be more about publicity than anything else.
  • Many bloggers point out that it is reasonable in a sport as competitive as golf that players would be looking for any edge possible.
  • Some bloggers mention that non-regulation, performance-enhanced equipment may be more of an issue than performance enhanced players.
