Humane Society To Pressure Sponsors To Cut Ties With Vick

 Nike's Vick IV D Cleat
The Humane Society will "renew its call for companies using [Falcons QB] Michael Vick as a spokesman to cut ties with him" after a U.S. federal court indicted him for alleged ties to a dog fighting ring, according to YAHOO SPORTS' Jason Cole.  Humane Society President Wayne Pacelle: "We're planning to make those calls first thing Wednesday."  Cole noted the Humane Society "asked Nike in June to drop Vick, but the company declined," and now the organization "plans to extend the call to companies such as Rawlings, Powerade and Kraft."  AirTran has already dropped Vick, and Pacelle indicated that the Boys & Girls Clubs of America "has recently done the same" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 7/17).  Nike Media Relations Manager Brian Facchini said, “We are aware of the indictment and are reviewing the information. We have no further comment at this time.” CNBC's Darren Rovell noted Vick’s Nike Air Zoom Vick IV D is currently selling for $84.99. His Zoom Vick V is scheduled to launch on August 23 for $100 (CNBC.com, 7/17).

"He put a $100[M] business at risk."

-- Former NFL Assistant General Counsel David Cornwell, on the impact that the indictment against Michael Vick may have on his income
(WASHINGTON POST, 7/18).

TOUGH TO RECOVER FROM THIS: NBCSPORTS.com’s Tom Curran wrote Vick’s reputation is now "stained and nasty. ... There’s no coming back from that. It will be interesting to see how hot a seller those No. 7 jerseys are now. How much Vick-endorsed product does Nike expect to move [now]?" (NBCSPORTS.com, 7/17). In Atlanta, Mark Bradley wonders if Vick’s career, “once a bright and shining thing, is nearing its soiled and sorry end.” It is “possible to wonder if any of us has ever known the real” Vick (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 7/18). In Richmond, Bob Lipper: “At best, his image has been battered beyond repair. At worst, he could be facing [jail]. Either way, he’s essentially finished as an NFL poster child and cash cow” (RICHMOND TIMES- DISPATCH, 7/18).
