MEDIAWEEK’s John Consoli reported CBS is over 90% sold out of its ad inventory for the upcoming U.S. Open, “getting mid-to-high single digit cost per thousand increases” for 30-second spots. New advertisers include Aviva, Canon, FedEx, Goodyear, ING and Valspar. CBS expects to have signed more 40 advertisers by its first telecast September 1 (MEDIAWEEK.com, 7/17).

BOSS HOG: The Islanders have sent out skates signed by Hockey HOFer Mike Bossy to 100 Long Island-based businesses who are not corporate sponsors.  The skates come with a letter from Bossy introducing himself and looking to get a ‘skate in the door’ with them at any level – sponsorship, tickets or charitable events. The campaign is a first for the club, which hopes to grow sponsorship revenue from $10M last season to $15M next season (Tripp Mickle, SportsBusiness Journal).

OUR ROOTS ARE GRASS: adidas is sponsoring its first national high school 7-on-7 football championship, which begins today in Carson, California, and the company is “paying the expenses for the 10 non-California teams” playing in the tournament.  Meanwhile, a recent 7-on-7 state tournament in Texas was sponsored by FSN Southwest, and an event in Long Beach was sponsored by Nike (USA TODAY, 7/18)....The Chosen League, one of Philadelphia’s top outdoor summer basketball programs, receives financial or apparel support from Reebok, Topps and Sneaker Villa, and Spalding provides glass backboards. The league does not require an entry fee, and its operating costs are taken care of by the donations of the league’s sponsors (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 7/18).

Hutchinson Says Linemen Seeing Growth In Status
NFL NOTES: Miami Herald columnist Dan Le Batard noted NFL Cardinals RB Edgerrin James has removed his trademark gold teeth and said, “More endorsements if you don’t (have gold teeth). A little more mainstream” (“PTI,” ESPN, 7/17)....Vikings G Steve Hutchinson was on ESPN’s “Jim Rome Is Burning” Monday, and Rome said he had to “pull (Hutchinson) away from a Nike commercial shoot" for the appearance.  Rome: “Offensive linemen are getting paid, they’re getting in commercials, are you guys finally starting to get your due?”  Hutchinson said, “We’re getting a little bit of rock-star status going. Guys are getting the contracts and stuff” (ESPN, 7/16).
