LeBron To Host "Saturday
Night Live" Season Premiere
Cavaliers F LEBRON JAMES will host the season premiere of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” The show “hopes to reprise the successful” performance of Colts QB PEYTON MANNING, who hosted last season (DAILY VARIETY, 7/18).  "SNL" head writer and cast member SETH MEYERS said Manning "showed up and right off the bat wanted to do something where he was mean to kids.  That's free comedy right there, so we were happy to oblige” (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/18)....In Cleveland, Bill Livingston notes James during a skit while co-hosting the ESPYs "dunked a doll" that was supposed to be a baby through a basket and said, "Let's see if ANGELINA JOLIE can adopt that baby."  Livingston: "By the most generous interpretation, the skit was part of a show-long attempt to mock himself. ... It also was an appalling lapse in judgment" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 7/18).

LIVING LIKE KINGS: The MALOOF family was profiled on CNBC’s “American Made” last night.  NBA Kings co-Owner JOE MALOOF: “When you own a team, there’s two parts of the equation.  You have the business part of it and then you have the competitive basketball part of the business.  So if a GM comes to you and he wants you to sign a $120[M] contract over six years, you have to really think to yourself, ‘Well, does it make smart business sense to do that?'  Do you really want that player or is it more important that the business stays financially sound and strong and viable and profitable?” (“American Made,” CNBC, 7/17).

NAMES: Dodgers Owner FRANK MCCOURT and his wife, Vice Chair & President JAMIE, have applied for membership at Riviera Country Club, which counts Colts Owner JIM IRSAY and Red Sox Chair TOM WERNER among its members (L.A. TIMES, 7/18)....FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. is relinquishing the WBC junior middleweight title he won from OSCAR DE LA HOYA on May 5, but will keep the welterweight championship.  HBO’s Larry Merchant indicated that De La Hoya “is contemplating returning to the welterweight division,” which “adds to the speculation the two will have a much-anticipated” rematch at 147 pounds (SACRAMENTO BEE, 7/18)....Sharks C PATRICK MARLEAU will serve as grand marshal for the Champ Car San Jose Grand Prix on July 29 (Sharks).
