Ginn Racing Replaces Sterling Marlin, Releases Joe Nemechek

Smith Taking Over Driving Duties
In Ginn Racing's No. 14 Chevy
Regan Smith will replace Sterling Marlin in Ginn Racing’s No. 14 Chevrolet for the remainder of the Nextel Cup season, and Joe Nemechek, who drove Ginn’s No. 13 Chevrolet, has been released as the team is “‘being evaluated’ because of lack of sponsorship,” according to David Poole of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Also, Aric Almirola will share the team’s No. 01 Chevrolet with Mark Martin (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/18).  Ginn does not plan to run the No. 13 Chevrolet at the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on July 29 “unless a sponsor is found.”  If that happens, Nemechek will drive the car (ESPN.com, 7/17).  The U.S. Army, which sponsors Ginn’s No. 01 car, is the "only full-time sponsor the team currently has in place for next season” (NASCAR.com, 7/17).  Marlin said of his release, “I kinda smelled a rat.  It wasn’t the classiest thing to do.  I’ve still got the rest of the year on my contract and my attorney’s talking to them right now” (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 7/18).

MERGE AHEAD: ESPN’s David Newton said the reported DEI/Ginn merger (see THE DAILY, 7/17) could be completed as soon as today.  Newton: “I would suspect Teresa Earnhardt and those folks would stay in charge.  They’ve been around longer.  They’ve run the more efficient program” (“NASCAR Now,” ESPN2, 7/17).

ROUSH FENWAY RACING: ESPN THE MAGAZINE’s Ryan McGee wrote Roush Racing and Fenway Sports Group (FSG) “continue to sift through details” of their partnership.  Sales staffs are “sharing contacts, and [FSG] marketing specialists are lending expertise to sell Roush’s NASCAR more effectively to children.”  Accountants are also “figuring out how to divvy up the eventual profits.”  NASCAR driver and Petty Enterprises Owner Kyle Petty said of other NASCAR teams looking to bring on equity partners, “NASCAR has always been monkey see, monkey do.  Roush had made plenty of moves in the past we all thought were crazy.  Well, now we’re all doing what he was smart enough to pioneer.”  Chip Ganassi Racing co-Owner Felix Sabates added, “It’s one thing to bring in a financial partner to help offset the out-of-control costs of racing.  It is something else entirely to bring in a high-profile partner with new ideas on how to market your team and how to recruit sponsors and who, just by adding his name, hands you a base of new fans” (ESPN.com, 7/17).
