Charity Stripe: NBA, Players Involved In Several Initiatives
In New Orleans, Andrew Lopez notes the NBA unveiled the logo for the ’08 All-Star Game yesterday at an NBA Cares-sponsored clinic held in conjunction with Tulane Univ.’s Ripples camp. Each of the more than 250 campers and staff received T-shirts with the new logo. The event is the “first of many NBA-related events in the city” leading up to the All-Star Game, which will be played at New Orleans Arena (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 7/18)….NBPA Exec Dir Billy Hunter, free agent G and NBPA President Derek Fisher, Wizards C and NBPA VP Etan Thomas, Celtics C and NBPA VP Theo Ratliff, Kings F and union rep Ron Artest and former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy are among those who spent the past week in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of the NBPA’s “Feeding One Million” campaign to distribute 11 million pounds of rice to impoverished residents (NBPA). Artest said that he “wants to build an offseason home in Africa” (USA TODAY, 7/18)….Bulls F Luol Deng Monday made his first appearance as the national spokesperson for the Nothing But Nets drive to end malaria in Africa. Deng was joined at a press conference at the United Center by Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, Nothing But Nets Dir Elizabeth McKee, Bulls Exec VP/Business Operations Steve Schanwald, WNBA Sky President & CEO Margaret Stender, MLS Fire MF Diego Gutierrez and former NBAer Bob Love (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 7/17).
