U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Being Run Around Major Events

Men's Olympic Marathon Trials To Be
Held One Day Before N.Y. Marathon
Many runners who compete in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials for the ’08 Summer Games will be “forgoing appearance fees and potential prize money offered by major fall marathons" like N.Y. and Chicago, according to Liz Robbins of the N.Y. TIMES.  The men's trials will be held in N.Y. on November 3, a day before the N.Y. Marathon.  The top three finishers earn berths on the U.S. Olympic team.  Olympic Silver Medalist Meb Keflezighi: “It’s a big sacrifice.  But there’s only one way to Beijing.”  Robbins noted the USOC, along with USA Track & Field (USATF), wanted to “experiment by pairing the trials with major marathons.”  The women’s marathon trials will be run in Boston, a day before the Boston Marathon in April.  But some runners and officials have “proposed combining the trials with a major marathon to avoid making runners choose one or the other.”  Mary Wittenberg, President & CEO of N.Y. Road Runners, organizers of the N.Y. Marathon and this year’s men’s trials, said the event “could be even bigger if you put the trials with the major marathon.”  But USATF Senior Manager of Long Distance Running Jim Estes said, “Why it can’t be inserted into the marathon is largely to do with marketing rights.”  Robbins noted ING is the title sponsor of the N.Y. Marathon, which conflicts with the USOC’s financial sponsor, Bank of America.  The N.Y. Marathon also has Asics as its shoe sponsor, while Nike sponsors both the USOC and USATF (N.Y. TIMES, 7/14).
