Reds Apparel Sales Slip Along With Team's On-Field Performance

Reds' Merchandise Sales
Falling Behind Last Year's Pace

SportsOneSource analyst Matt Powell said that sales of Reds apparel have “fallen from an early 2007 pace,” and in Cincinnati, John Eckberg reports that from February-April, the Reds represented 3% of all items sold by MLB, excluding team shops and independent stores, compared with 2.6% for the same period last year.  But by May, Reds sales had “dipped to a 2.6[%] share of all goods sold,” compared to 2.8% in May ’06.  Powell said before the season, “Everybody is equal.  Hope moves sales.  Later, what moves the needle is success."  The Reds currently have the worst record in the NL at 27-44.  Eckberg reported LF Adam Dunn has sold the most Reds jerseys, and ranks at No. 40 on SportsOneSource’s list of top MLB sellers.  But rookie P Homer Bailey's jersey "is the one that's clearly in demand” at Koch Sporting Goods in downtown Cincinnati.  Store owner Kris Koch said rookie CF Josh Hamilton's jersey is also selling well.  Yeager Sports Owner Rick Yaeger said, “The Bengals were the same way until about three years ago.  When the Bengals started to win, people couldn't get enough of it” (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 6/17).
