“Hmmmm… could this be an attempt by the IOC’s marketing division to convince the ‘average young person’ that they should care about their elitist, gaudy, and corruption-ridden international circus? And could they possibly be trying to accomplish that goal without anyone from the IOC actually having to ever talk to a skateboarder? I wonder.”

“This could be a huge boost for skateboarding and add a fresh new element into the Olympics. Much like snowboarding has added something cooler and modern to the Olympics, so too will skateboarding. Being acknowledged as an Olympic sport is the ultimate feather in the cap for a sport that has long been considered ‘not serious’ by those outside of it.”

“The worst thing about the Winter Olympics in recent years has been the addition of sports like snowboarding, just as the worst thing about ESPN is the X-Games. These activities are fine for teenagers in their free time, but every minute of televised skateboarding during the Summer Olympics would be a minute taken away from better sports. Adding skateboarding would be a serious mistake.”

“Whether skateboarding gets into the Olympics or not, it’s really not a big deal. The Olympics won’t make skateboarding better or worse, it would just be another competition similar to the X-games, and people will watch it and be like, ‘Oh, that was cool’. Skateboarding is still skateboarding, and there is nothing those big organizations can do to change that.”

“I’m sure people will continue skating the way they’re skating today and getting the same enjoyment out of it, but are we going to see a new generation of skateboarders arise that have as a goal getting to the Olympics instead of just having fun? Are we going to have rivalries between ‘hardcore’ skateboarders and those wearing uniforms?”
