Sources Say Scott's Income 
Topped $1M In '06
SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL’s Daniel Kaplan reports in '06, the head of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour earned more than the head of the ATP “for the first time in the more than three decades the groups have existed.” Sources said WTA CEO LARRY SCOTT made more than $1M, with bonuses, while tax returns state ATP Chair & CEO ETIENNE DE VILLIERS earned $763,966 (SBJ, 6/4 issue).

BUY & SELL: AMERICAN SKIING CO. has agreed to sell Maine resorts Sunday River and Sugarloaf/USA to Michigan-based BOYNE USA for $77M and the assumption of $2M in debt and liabilities, “passing on a competing bid from its former [CEO] LES OTTEN.” American Skiing has sold all five of its New England resorts since December for a combined $421M. It now only owns The Canyons in Park City, Utah (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/6)....Sports Direct Deputy Exec Chair & Founder MIKE ASHLEY, who bought a 3% stake in adidas at the end of March for US$358.8M, made a US$57.8M profit after selling the entire share (Manchester GUARDIAN, 6/6).

ENERGY SOURCE: Chesapeake Energy Corp. Chair & CEO AUBREY MCCLENDON paid $400,000 to run full-page ads in the Wall Street Journal, N.Y. Times, Washington Post, Raleigh News & Observer and Durham Herald-Sun praising Duke Univ. lacrosse players for “standing tall during extraordinarily difficult circumstances over the past 15 months” (DAILY OKLAHOMAN, 6/6).

NAMES: A Sotheby’s auction of 343 lots of sports memorabilia brought in $4.73M. Items included the jersey worn by Knicks C WILLIS REED during Game Seven of the ’70 NBA Finals, which sold for $90,000, and the ’51 World Series ring of HOF Yankees manager CASEY STENGEL, which sold for $180,000 (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 6/6)....MUHAMMAD ALI received an honorary doctorate at Princeton Univ. (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 6/6)....Colts President BILL POLIAN, a former GM of the Bills, was among the 11 people selected for induction into the Greater Buffalo Sports HOF in October (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/6)....The 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games were awarded to Athens over finalists Cleveland and Rabat, Morocco (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 6/6)....Lenovo China VP/Olympic Marketing and Head of Brand Communications ALICE LI was included among AD AGE's 30 Women To Watch (AD AGE, 6/4 issue).
