The Ontario Securities Commission formally reprimanded Senators Owner EUGENE
MELNYK, who will pay C$1M and be barred from serving on the BOD of Biovail
Corp. for one year. Last July, Melnyk was accused of “failing to file trading
reports and other required disclosures in connection with offshore accounts in
the Cayman Islands.” Melnyk announced last week that he was retiring as Chair
of the Biovail BOD on June 30 (CP, 5/19).
MAKING A COMEBACK: “THROUGH A SAINT’S EYES,” a 7 1/2-minute documentary
following the Saints’ return to New Orleans and their ’06 season, screened at
this year’s Tribeca Film Festival in N.Y. Saints TE MARK CAMPBELL and his
friend, KEVIN MCCABE, put the video together. Campbell: “It was a quick
turnaround. I only had three weeks to do everything.” Campbell noted the film
is also available on Verizon Wireless’ V Cast service (TIMES-PICAYUNE, 5/20).
IT’S SHOWTIME: Sodexho USA’s Retail Brand Group is working with Magic Johnson
Enterprises to develop three MAGIC JOHNSON-themed restaurant concepts:
a sports bar, a sandwich shop and a food court. Merchandise could also be sold
at stores. It is “not known which concept will reach market first, but the first
Johnson-themed eatery could open this fall” (Baltimore SUN, 5/19).

USTA Taking Different Approach In Development Of Brengle

MADISON AVENUE: The USTA is using 17-year-old MADISON BRENGLE as
“a test case for a new approach to producing American tennis stars.” As part of
a new training program that “emulates intensive athletic programs” in Europe,
a team of coaches and trainers have “focused on her for the past seven months.”
She goes “weeks without seeing her parents [and] trains six hours a day.” Brengle
and 17-year-old ASHLEY WEINHOLD started the program in November and live
together at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Florida (WALL STREET JOURNAL,
5/19).
NAMES: Free agent RB CURTIS MARTIN filed a lawsuit in federal court,
revealing he is “totally disabled due to a knee injury and is suing LLOYD’S
OF LONDON for refusing to pay him” $5M in coverage he purchased in ’05 (N.Y.
DAILY NEWS, 5/19)....L.A. Times columnist T.J. SIMERS owns 1% of
KIDDY UP, a two-year-old horse that won its first race at Los Alamitos Race
Course on Friday night (L.A. TIMES, 5/20)....With Syracuse Univ. men’s
basketball coach JIM BOEHEIM last week calling for lower student-athlete
academic standards, a SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS editorial noted the graduation rate
of the ’06 Syracuse team “was more than 10 points lower than the university’s
overall rate. Here’s a suggestion for the coach: Give up the campaign for lower
standards and devote that energy to helping your players get better grades” (SAN
JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 5/20).
