Vikings Sign New Local TV Rights Deals With Three Partners

Vikings Sign Local TV Rights
Deals With Three Stations
The Vikings have signed three-year deals with KSTP-ABC, KMSP-Fox and FSN North as their local TV partners. KMSP will be the “Home of Vikings Football,” airing two 30-minute, Vikings-themed programs during the season, as well as 13 of the team’s 16 regular-season games. KSTP will air the team’s preseason games, while FSN North will air the 30-minute “Vikings Weekly” program year-round (Vikings). In Minneapolis, Judd Zulgad reported the team will “control and sell about 85[%] of the advertising for the exhibition games” in a deal “very similar” to the one it has with KFAN-AM. While KSTP “might be working under a different structure and not have as much Vikings programming” as before, station GM Rob Hubbard said, “The important part of the package was clearly the games.” KSTP has broadcast preseason games the past seven years, but Zulgad noted the team returning to the station “was a bit surprising,” since the station’s investigative story around the “Love Boat” scandal in November ’05 “angered the organization.” Meanwhile, FSN North VP & GM Mike Dimond “will assume a key role in determining the looks of the Vikings programming on several platforms,” as the RSN will essentially be the team’s production arm (STARTRIBUNE.com, 5/18).
