Alamo Bowl Set To Announce Valero Energy As Title Sponsor

San Antonio-based Valero Energy Corp. has signed an agreement in principle to be the new title sponsor of the Alamo Bowl, according to sources cited by Griffin & Oliver of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. The game is expected to be renamed the Valero Alamo Bowl. MasterCard pulled out of its sponsorship after the ’05 game. Sources said that the Valero deal would “match the three years remaining on the bowl’s current agreements with the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences to supply teams to the annual bowl game.” Valero would become the game’s first local title sponsor since Builders Square, which sponsored the game from ‘93-98. Valero has long-standing relationships with the Spurs and Double-A Texas League San Antonio Missions, and has sponsored the PGA Tour Valero Texas Open since ’01 (EXPRESS-NEWS, 5/21).
