IOC President Says Only Olympic Flag Will Be Used At Youth Olympic Games
|
IOC President Jacques Rogge said that “no national flags and anthems will be used for the Youth Olympic Games,” which will be held in 2010 for the first time, according to AROUND THE RINGS. Rogge said that the Olympic flag and anthem “would be used during medal ceremonies ... [to] avoid nationalism.” No more than 3,000 athletes would compete in the summer games, while the winter games would include 1,000. Both would last ten days. Rogge said that Moscow and Singapore have “expressed an interest” in hosting the inaugural event. Rogge said that “no major infrastructure projects will be expected,” adding that using existing facilities “will be a must ... to hold down costs.” He said that the event “should cost no more than [$30-40M] to stage,” and all travel expenses for athletes and officials would be paid by the IOC, estimated at about $11M. Rogge said that a free TV signal would be provided to worldwide rights holders (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 5/10).
