Singapore will stage an F1 Grand Prix next year, “with the race set to be the
first in the sport’s history to be held at night,” according to BBC SPORT. The
race is planned for September or early October. Singapore will stage the race
for five years, with F1 Management Chair Bernie Ecclestone “keeping the option
to extend the deal for a further five years.” Ecclestone “wants to expand the
F1 calendar from 17 to 20 races per season, and the addition of Singapore is the
second new race in two days.” A race in Valencia, Spain, was announced Thursday
(BBC.co.uk, 5/11). BBC’s Juliana Liu noted that at a press conference announcing
the race, “the Singapore minister in charge said that tourism money generated
from this event in either of September or October of next year would be something
in the neighborhood of (US$66M). Driving this deal, which has been months in the
making, has been a group of Singaporian businessman” (BBC America, 5/11).
