Sportsnet’s Deal With Maple Leafs Could Affect NHL, TSN

Maple Leafs' Deal With Rogers Sportsnet
Could Impact NHL's National Rights Negotiations
Sportsnet’s exclusive eight-year deal with the Maple Leafs is “bad news” for the NHL, which is attempting to extend its national cable contract with TSN, according to William Houston of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. With the Maple Leafs deal done, Sportsnet “will not pursue a national deal,” leaving the NHL with “only one major cable network to talk to, and apparently negotiations with TSN are not going well.” The NHL reached a national broadcast deal with the CBC in March, but “might have handicapped itself by not negotiating with the CBC and TSN in tandem.” The CBC will pay the league C$100M annually and “agreed to give up five Leafs games a season and a third playoff series involving a Canadian team in the same round.” Sources said that the NHL wants “about [C$45M] from TSN for the cable package. But TSN’s response seems to be: Why should we pay almost half of what the CBC is paying for five extra Leafs games?” Houston notes TSN “also felt the negative impact of the Sportsnet-Leafs deal.” As the exclusive rights holder for Maple Leafs games, Sportsnet could “shut out TSN as a carrier of regional Leafs games, a major blow because the Leafs produce TSN’s largest NHL audiences” (GLOBE & MAIL, 5/11).
