Marketplace Round-Up

In N.Y., Tim Smith writes Floyd Mayweather Jr. stands to earn an estimated $25M-plus from his bout with Oscar De La Hoya last weekend and “seems poised to join De La Hoya as a major attraction in boxing. With the proper marketing and matchups, Mayweather could be the future of the sport,” with De La Hoya transitioning to the business side. HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg said that if Mayweather, who has said he will retire, “decides he wants to continue, then ‘the sky is the limit’” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/11). Mayweather said of HBO’s “24/7” series, which depicted him as a “profane, money flaunting, trash talker” as it followed him and De La Hoya leading up to the fight, “I’m glad 24/7 showed me like that because it got me crazy deals. My phone won’t stop ringing” (N.Y. POST, 5/11). Mayweather, on his business ventures: “We’ve got the Mayweather Boxing Club. We got Mayweather Music. We got Filthy Rich [Records]. We got so many things that we’re involved in. We got movie deals, we got reality show deals” (ESPNews, 5/10).

A total of ten films have been made with the players divided into two groups that wear either adidas’ Predator or F50. The films are part of a “wider digital campaign” on adidas’ Web site and were created by largeblue, London (Manchester GUARDIAN, 5/11).
