Red Sox Chair TOM WERNER has signed a new deal with Warner Bros. TV that will keep him with the studio for two more years. Werner is also teaming with MIKE CLEMENTS and JIMMY MILLER on a NASCAR-themed comedy focusing on a pit crew. NASCAR will be a producer on the project (DAILY VARIETY, 5/4)....HBO Films is adapting the Pulitzer Prize-winning trilogy “THE SPORTSWRITER,” by RICHARD FORD, into a six-hour miniseries directed by JAMES MANGOLD. It will cover 30 years in the life of fictional sportswriter FRANK BASCOMBE (DAILY VARIETY, 5/4).

HORSE TRAILER: U.S. Sen. MITCH MCCONNELL (R-KY) has re-introduced a multimillion-dollar tax break for racehorse owners “that could cost taxpayers more than a quarter of a billion dollars over five years.” The “Equine Equity Act” would reduce from two years to one the time an owner would have to hold a racehorse “before it would be eligible for the capital gains tax rate at sale.” The bill would also allow horses “to be depreciated over three years; some are now depreciated over seven” (LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER, 5/3).

Pitino Inks Three-Year Extension
With Univ. Of Louisville
CARD SHARK: Univ. of Louisville men’s basketball coach RICK PITINO signed a three-year extension in which he will make at least $23.2M if he remains with the team through 2013. That figure, which is “believed to be among the top 10 in college basketball,” includes $2.25M annually for the next three years and $2.5M a year for the final three (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 5/4).

POLICE BLOTTER: Bengals WR CHAD JOHNSON was added to a lawsuit filed by a Cincinnati man over a Lexus giveaway at the Funny Bone Comedy Club (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 5/4)....Kings F RON ARTEST pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge stemming from a March 5 dispute. He was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and a 20-day work project, with ten days suspended. He was also fined $600 and ordered to get counseling (USA TODAY, 5/4)....Free agent LB STEVE FOLEY, who was shot last year by an off-duty police officer during a traffic stop near San Diego, pleaded guilty to a DUI charge and was placed on five years’ unsupervised probation (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/4).
