Newsmakers: Wachovia Championship Draws In National Media

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of some people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers.

Jordan (l) And Woods Pro-Am Pairing
Receives National Media Coverage
WIN: WACHOVIA CHAMPIONSHIP -– The five-year old PGA Tour event continues to attract all the best players, with 27 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Ranking teeing it up this week in Charlotte. And what regular Tour stop garners prominent treatment in USA Today and on “SportsCenter”? For its pro-am no less! Pairing TIGER and MICHAEL on Wednesday was (no pun intended) a master stroke.

LOSE: MLB — The plea agreement by former Mets clubhouse assistant KIRK RADOMSKI is the worst possible news for MLB. It means there is someone out there ready to name names, and if players fail to cooperate, look for Congress to get involved. As many write this week, this story is not going away anytime soon, as steroids will be in the news this year and maybe for years to come.

DRAW: CAA SPORTS — Yes, the agency led the way with six first-round picks in last weekend’s NFL Draft, but one of its prized rookies, BRADY QUINN, sees his stock drop dramatically, not taken until the 22nd pick. And CAA faces questions of why it had its client in the green room, only to be shuffled away by ROGER GOODELL to save further embarrassment.
