NBA PLAYOFFS: ABC, ESPN and TNT are averaging 1.8% of U.S. TV households through Tuesday’s coverage of the NBA playoffs, down 10% from the same point last year and down 38% from the same point in ’00, “when more games were carried on broadcast TV instead of cable.” USA TODAY’s Michael Hiestand writes after ABC posted “the fifth consecutive record-low ratings” for NBA regular-season games this year, “you have to wonder just how low the league’s ratings could go in these playoffs. Or they could rebound” (USA TODAY, 5/4). ABC earned a 3.3/10 for Sunday’s Suns-Lakers Game Four, down 23.3% from a 4.3/10 for the same matchup last year. The net earned a 2.4/7 for the Bulls-Heat series-clinching Game Four, down 14.3% from a 2.8/7 for the same matchup last year (THE DAILY). Suns-Lakers Game Three on Thursday and Mavericks-Warriors Game Three on Friday tied for the 11th highest cable viewership for the week ended April 29. Warriors-Mavericks Game Two on Wednesday tied for 13th (USA TODAY, 5/4).

BASEBALL: Fox, through the first four weeks of its MLB coverage on Saturdays, is averaging a 2.7/7 and 3.95 million viewers, up 8% and 18%, respectively, compared to the first four weeks last year. Regional coverage of Red Sox-Yankees and Cubs-Cardinals last Saturday drew a 2.9/7, up 16% from comparable coverage last year (Fox). Overall, ESPN’s MLB telecasts are averaging 1,508,000 HHs, up 26% over the comparable 1,199,000 HHs last year. The corresponding 1.6 rating is up 23% over the 1.3 in ‘06. ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” is averaging a 2.8/ (2,568,000 HHs), up 56% from a 1.8/ (1,651,000) at the same point last season (THE DAILY).

NHL PLAYOFFS: NBC earned a 1.0/3 for its national coverage of the double-OT Sabres-Rangers Game Three last Sunday, even with Avalanche-Ducks Game Two last year. The net’s national coverage of Sharks-Red Wings Game Two on Saturday earned a 0.8/2, also even with the coverage of the Devils-Hurricanes Game One last year (THE DAILY).
