Japanese Net Expecting Ratings Record For Red Sox-Yankees

By Eric Fisher, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal

NHK Expecting Record Ratings For
Matsuzaka's First Game At Yankee Stadium
Tonight’s Yankees-Red Sox game, marking the Yankee Stadium debut of Red Sox P Daisuke Matsuzaka, is projected to be the highest-rated regular-season game ever for Japanese broadcaster NHK. The game will be on Saturday morning in Japan and also feature Yankees LF Hideki Matsui. “They’re telling us they’re expecting a very big number, and they think there’s a good chance it’ll set a record for a regular-season broadcast,” said MLB Senior VP/Int’l Business Operations Paul Archey. “There’s obviously a lot of interest in this game over there.” Rain, however, is forecast for throughout the day and evening in N.Y. NHK’s intensive coverage of Matsuzaka earlier this month drew sharp criticism from Japan Finance Minister Koji Omi, but prior broadcasts of games involving the Japanese phenom have posted very strong ratings.
