Univ. Of Minnesota Fans Stop Making “Brew’s Crew” T-shirts

Univ. Of Minnesota Halts
Production Of T-Shirt
The Univ. of Minnesota (UM) has stopped production of a T-shirt around new football coach Tim Brewster that reads “Brew’s Crew,” saying that the slogan “is too closely related to alcohol,” according to the AP. UM Assistant AD for External Relations Tom Wistrcill: “We don’t think it’s in our best interest -– for the athletic department and the university –- to associate ourselves with that inference to alcohol.” The Goal Line Club, the school’s booster club for the football program, sold the shirts “to raise money for the athletics program.” The shirts remaining are still being sold at goallineclub.com, “but further production has been stopped” (AP, 4/25). UM AD Joel Maturi said, “We believe there are other ways to promote the program without sending mixed messages about alcohol.” Goal Line Club President Teresa Grim said, “We thought we had the OK to do it. We’ll abide by the university’s ruling. At the time, we thought we had a pretty catchy phrase. We didn’t think about the alcohol connection” (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 4/26).
