Sports Teams Continue To Pay Tribute To Virginia Tech

Saunders Pays Tribute To Alma
Mater During Game Against Mariners
NFL VP/PR Greg Aiello said that the Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer has accepted the league’s invitation to next weekend’s NFL Draft. Aiello said the league is working on plans to honor the 32 victims of the campus shooting last week (AP, 4/20).

MLB: Angels P Joe Saunders, who played at Virginia Tech from ’00-02, received special permission from MLB to wear a VT hat during his start against the Mariners on Friday (L.A. TIMES, 4/21)....The Red Sox received permission from MLB to wear a black VT on their left sleeve during Friday’s game against the Yankees. Red Sox VP/Media Relations John Blake said that the idea came from manager Terry Francona and C Jason Varitek. Red Sox 3B Kevin Youkilis also passed out VT caps to teammates, courtesy of VT assistant baseball coach Mike Gambino (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/21). Youkilis wore a VT hat while reading the team’s lineup during Fox’ coverage of Yankees-Red Sox on Saturday (THE DAILY)....The Orioles wore VT armbands during Friday’s game against the Blue Jays and will give free admission to VT students for every Friday night home game this season (WASHINGTON POST, 4/21).

VIRGINIA NATIVES: Nuggets G Allen Iverson, who is from Virginia, “is wearing a patch with Virginia Tech’s logo on his elbow sleeve for the rest of the season” (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 4/23)....For Saturday’s Nextel Cup Subway Fresh Fit 500, State Water Heaters, the primary sponsor of Virginia native Ward Burton’s No. 4 Morgan-McClure Motorsports Chevrolet, requested that the VT logo replace its own on the car’s hood. Darian Grubb, the crew chief for Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 25 Chevrolet, is a VT graduate whose mother works at the school, and a VT banner flew over the team’s pit box. A VT hat sat on the studio desk during Fox’ prerace coverage (Fox, 4/21).

PENN STATE: Penn State Univ. held its annual spring football game Saturday, and the crowd of 71,000 “consisted of more maroon and orange than blue and white.” Outside Beaver Stadium, sororities “collected money for a fund for Virginia Tech, holding signs that said, ‘We are all Hokies.’” A student group “formed a human ‘VT’ in the stands with its arrangement of orange and maroon shirts.” “Amazing Grace” was played and a moment of silence was observed before kickoff (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 4/22).
