NBA To Appoint Committee To Examine Vegas’ Pitch For Team

Stern Appointing Committee To
Examine Las Vegas' Proposal For Team

NBA Commissioner David Stern will appoint a committee of team owners “to study the proposal [Las Vegas] Mayor Oscar Goodman submitted about how his city would handle a team,” according to Brian Mahoney of the AP. Stern indicated that the owners asked for a committee to be established “so there could be further study ‘without prejudging anything.’” NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said that the committee “probably would be established in the next several weeks.” In addition to the issue of having NBA games on betting boards, Mahoney noted the committee will also look at “where the team would play and what a possible relocation fee would be.” Goodman: “I’m delighted we’re in a position today where we are alive and in the ballgame.” Goodman added that an RFP for “funding a new arena went out Thursday” (AP, 4/21).

ZEBRA CHASE: In Sacramento, Scott Howard-Cooper reported the NBA and the National Basketball Referees Association “could begin negotiating a new contract next season under the cover of tension” after the indefinite suspension of Joey Crawford. The current deal expires after the ’08-09 season, and “both sides have built their share of resentment before conversations even begin and acrimony really develops during negotiations” (SACRAMENTO BEE, 4/22).
