Writer Calls Olbermann
Addition “Curious Move”
In N.Y., Bob Raissman wrote NBC adding Keith Olbermann to “Football Night in America” is a “curious move.” There is “absolutely no way” Bob Costas or Cris Collinsworth “can be thrilled over a blowhard like Olbermann encroaching on their turf.” The move “leaves the impression that Collinsworth and Costas, consummate professionals, are not only needy, but in desperate need of help. It’s a cold, hard slap in the face” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/22).

PREMIER DEAL: In “a bid to stop the growing financial divide between richer and poorer sides becoming even wider,” Premier League teams “agreed to modify the way the 25[%] of their broadcasting income allocated to clubs shown on live TV is shared out.” However, several smaller clubs “want to increase the amount of money distributed equally between all clubs” from 50% to 70% (London OBSERVER, 4/22).

NIGHTFALL: In Charlotte, Jim Utter writes there is a “growing sentiment ... that late start times for races have contributed to [NASCAR’s] recent decline in TV ratings. It’s about time someone (a) acknowledged there is a problem and (b) realized part of the problem is the alienation of NASCAR’s core fan base in recent years” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/23).

MIC CHECK: Home plate umpire Bob Davidson wore a microphone during Fox’ broadcast of Yankees-Red Sox on Saturday, and Fox’ Joe Buck said it is “something new for 2007.” Video and audio was aired of Davidson interacting with a young fan between innings (Fox, 4/21).
