Swimming Upstream: Dolphins Take Radio Rights Back To WQAM

Dolphins Moving Radio
Rights Back To WQAM-AM
The Dolphins are moving their radio rights back to WQAM-AM after two years with WAXY-AM, according to Barry Jackson of the MIAMI HERALD. Primetime Media Group CEO Joel Feinberg, whose company leases WAXY’s signal, said that he offered the club $2.2M annually for the rights, as well as $360,000 for “hospitality and signage costs and to cover the salaries of the announcers,” which was “well below the $3.5[M] he paid last season.” Feinberg “believes WQAM outbid him.” WQAM declined to comment. Feinberg said that he “lost money on the Dolphins and wasn’t comfortable offering anything close to last season’s rights fee.” Feinberg: “It was in the best interest of the station to not enter a deal with the Dolphins that would be a loss as soon as the pen hit the paper.” But he added of losing the rights, “I’m very upset. I gave them blood, sweat and tears for two years –- hiring [play-by-play announcer] Jimmy Cefalo, who belongs in a funeral home he’s so dead. ... All they care about is money” (MIAMI HERALD, 4/21). WAXY execs said that the decision “will free up plenty of programming time and give them the opportunity to forge contracts with other teams,” including the Marlins, whose deal with WQAM expires after the ’07 season (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 4/21).

BROWN TOWN: The Browns have signed new three-year deals with both WKYC-NBC and SportsTime Ohio (STO). WKYC will air the team’s four preseason games, as well as “The Pregame Huddle,” during the regular season and “The Point After” on Monday nights. All preseason games will be available in HD. STO will feature year-round Browns programming (Browns).
