Mixed Ratings Results For Opening Weekend Of NBA Playoffs

Writer Lauds MLSE For Producing
Broadcast Of Nets-Raptors Game One
ABC earned a 3.9 overnight Nielsen rating for yesterday’s Lakers-Suns Game One, down 4.9% from a 4.1 for the same matchup last year. The net earned a 2.8 for Saturday’s Heat-Bulls Game One, up 3.7% from a 2.7 for the comparable Wizards-Cavaliers Game One last year (THE DAILY).

PLAYOFF NOTES: With Raptors NBA TV airing Saturday’s Nets-Raptors Game One, in Toronto, Chris Zelkovich writes Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment “could have taken the easy route and picked up the ESPN broadcast, saving itself about $50,000 in production costs.” But the net instead aired its own coverage, providing a “solid broadcast, with stories that would have eluded an American broadcaster” (TORONTO STAR, 4/23). In Orlando, Jerry Greene noted Magic broadcast partner WRBW-MYT ran promos prior to Saturday’s Magic-Pistons Game One stating, “Detroit versus the Magic — only on My65,” despite the game also airing on ESPN. WRBW’s “color image of the game was not nearly as intense as the ESPN image,” which “might have driven a lot of local viewers” to ESPN (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 4/22).

LAKERS: In L.A., Larry Stewart noted local ratings for the Lakers on KCAL-Ind this season increased by 15% to a 4.6 from a 4.0 last season (L.A. TIMES, 4/21).
