Shout It Out: ESPN Ombudsman Claims Too Much Yelling On Net

ESPN Ombudsman Feels Too Much
Shouting By Anchors And Commentators

In her latest contribution as ESPN Ombudsman, Le Anne Schreiber wrote that since being asked in January to consider taking the position, she has “heard a lot of yelling, from some but not all of the anchors [and] from some but not all of the commentators.” The anchors “sound manic” and the commentators “sound angry.” Schreiber: “None of the yellers sounds to me as if he is reacting authentically to something he cares about.” She added one of the “great pleasures of watching sports is the communal jaw-dropped moment of quiet that follows a display of spectacular athleticism,” but highlights on “SportsCenter” are “all roar.” Schreiber noted there is “harm ... when the loud, cocksure approach is applied to certain off-the-field issues.” When Falcons QB Michael Vick was involved in an incident at Miami Int’l Airport in January for surrendering a water bottle that was alleged to have contained marijuana, the story “was rushed straight to judgment within hours of the first sketchy wire service report.” When Vick was exonerated within a week, Schreiber “did not hear any apologies.” But Schreiber wrote that since she began watching ESPN programming, her “subjective impression is that the over-the-top shouted certainty of opinion has toned down a bit” (ESPN.com, 4/12).
