49ers Claim Santa Clara Stadium Would Add $100M To Economy

49ers Estimate Santa Clara Stadium’s
Annual Economic Impact At $100M |
A new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara “would put $100[M] into the city’s annual economy,”
according to a team-commissioned economic study cited by Patrick Hoge of the S.F.
CHRONICLE. The study, prepared by Minneapolis-based Conventions Sports & Leisure
Int’l (CS&L), was released “in advance of the team’s expected request later this
month that the Santa Clara City Council invest nearly $200[M] of public money
in the new stadium.” The numbers do not include the monetary impact of building
the stadium, which the 49ers claim would “require 700 workers and pump $164[M]
into the regional economy over a 30-month period.” California State Univ.-East
Bay professor and Journal of Sports Economics Editor Leo Kahane said, “I would
be cautious or wary of any economic study that claims to bring great wealth to
any city that builds a stadium for a pro-sports franchise.” CS&L’s Bill Rhoda
said, “We believe our numbers are accurate and conservative” (S.F. CHRONICLE,
4/5). In San Jose, Swift & Patel cite sources as saying that due to the “rapid
run-up in stadium construction costs, the final cost would top $950[M],” $150M
more than an earlier estimate. Santa Clara’s contribution “would remain at about
$180[M] -– slightly less than 20[%] of the total cost” (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS,
4/5).
