Blog Hound: International Infusion A Growing Trend In MLS

With the ‘07 MLS about to kick off, soccer bloggers are discussing the league’s recent signings of high-profile players. Mexican star Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who signed with the Chicago Fire this week, joins L.A. Galaxy’s David Beckham and Red Bulls’ Claudio Reyna as three to jump onboard with MLS squads this offseason.

“This signing is another example of MLS looking to brand teams and stud up its rosters with players able boost ticket sales across the country. First Chivas USA, then Beckham and now Blanco; there are now 3 teams which are certain to capitalize on player and/or team appeal outside of their home cities. Who will be next?”

“It’s said of nearly all the recent Designated Player signings in one way or another: they put butts in the seats. So, OK, while Blanco might pull in a few of his countrymen - though even that looks suspect - and Beckham no doubt will draw some rubbernecking, are you buying it?”

“But in bringing these players into the domestic league, MLS has raised the profile and caliber of the league, giving young players a greater platform for their performances that could lead to offers from abroad - or simply improve the quality of development here.”

“If Blanco has the same effect among Mexican fans that Beckham is expected to have among fans or prospective fans in general, his move will be just as grand. MLS has been chasing Mexican fans since the beginning with little success.”

“How much drawing power does Blanco still have for Mexican-American communities at MLS stops? In Chicago there is no doubt they can boost attendance if the club promotes Blanco in a positive way.”
